v70 1998 - Stalls Intermittently_Lambda light_ V70-XC70 1998

I have a very frustrating problem with my 1998 v70.
- Intermittently, it stalls from idle. Frequency 1wk to 3 weeks.
- Cant get it to repeat the stall, just runs fine until it feels like it.
- Starts right up again, repeats same.
- Lambda light comes on. also CEC light.
What I have done.
- Removed and cleaned throttle body.
- Checked ALL vacuum hoses, replaced a couple of small elbows.
- Cleaned out the recirc valve going back into the throttle body.
- Removed and cleaned properly the MAF using the right spray cleaner. This lasted 3wks.
- New air filter.
- Cleaned and used dielectric grease on the connectors for both o2 sensors and
the MAF.
- New plugs, wires, cap, rotor.
- Have analysed the timing of the stall and it is NOT related to rain, or temperature. It has been minus 20 and now is plus 15. (C)
What is weird.
- To look underneath after the last stall, i drove the left front side up on a wheel ramp. The lambda light went out !

Codes.
- Last time I had it read, it was lambda and mechanic said 'try replacing both 02 sensors.' I hate just chucking dollars at sensors when it could be something else.

It would be easier to find if it just stopped on the highway and wouldnt start. This intermittent stuff is for the birds, or the experts.

Note the car is well maintained and runs at 120km/hr for 1 hr daily. Never a problem at speed and works beautifully, smooth, good on gas.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone that has diagnosed and fixed a similar issue.

thanks very much

Quite difficult for us to diagnose without knowing the codes that turn on the Lambda and CEL. So far, you have done everything correctly.

The Lambda light is the USA version of emmisions error. Probably a cracked "J" hose back by the right rear wheel, close to the fuel pump.

      v70 1998 - Stalls Intermittently_Lambda light_ V70-XC70 1998

      Hi Klaus,
      So a friendly mechanic with a scanner gave me this information;

      P 0171B Bank 1 system too lean.
O2 sensor 1/1 is functional. Shows varying voltage.
02 sensor 1/2 no voltage shown.

I assume that this is the after cat sensor?
      Would this cause stalling?

I read reference to a Tech document about possible bad MAF plug connections, and using a tie wrap to hold it together. Any possibility.?
      thanks
      John

Most unusual to have the rear O2 sensor go dead, it usually lasts a long time. It could be a wiring issue or just a dead sensor that needs to be replaced.

System too lean could be a poor functioning MAF. The lean condition means that the ECU will compensate by over riching the system which can then cause the plugs to foul at low rpm.

The zip tie for the MAF wires, not the plug, is to keep the stress off the MAF plug because of engine torque and other movement. Just zip the wire harness to the air box or some other fender mounted immobile part.

it may be bad connectors or wiring i'm thinking now.
I opened the 2 sensors plug-in connectors again. (In the Engine Room Adjacent to the steering knuckle.)
Scratched clean the small spade terminals with a jeweller screwdriver, and reassembled with dielectric.
Looks like the rear sensor wire was rubbing against the rotating steering knuckle, the cover was ripped off.
          Lambda light is out.
Did the same screwdriver clean with the MAF plug and took your advise with the tiewrap to the airbox.
          Father time will tell.
          Thanks for the great pointers.
I have to say, my '94 945t is a lot easier to diagnose and fix than the v70. This was designed by sadistic Swedish midgets with long skinny arms and fingers.
