Replacing fuel filter on S70 S70

Hi Everyone,
I have a 1999 S70GLT with 115,000 miles on it and i would like to replace the fuel filter. So far the car runs ok but i read at, 100k miles the fuel filter should be replaced.

I looked under the car and it looks like there is one on the bottom of the car and it looks like there is what looks like a fuel filter on the right side of the car close to where the rear passenger sits. Its protected by a bracket that is fairly strong looking. There is no bolts that i can see so i was wondering how to get the thing off. And the brackets have some bolts on it but i didnt know if i should take some of those off or not. I read on other websites that its above the rear axel but this on is not above the rear axel but just in front of it. You can find it by looking under the car without jacking it up. I found tape on both sides of the connector fitting areas. It was sealed up pretty good.

Well i was wondering how to get at the bolts or something to take it off? Anybody have some ideas?

Andrew

Hi Nube,

The fuel filter connections are of the quick release type. The fittings do indeed just get pushed away from the filter to release it from the fuel lines.

The mention of the 17mm wrench is not to turn a bolt but to help you push the connectors apart.

Keep a shop cloth handy to catch a few dribbles of gasoline. A small soup can is mentioned by others, but not that much comes out.

The new filter has a directional arrow embossed on it, pointing toward the front of the car.

Clean off the undercoating completly before trying to move the pipe fittings. Loosen the torx screw first, but don't remove it. It sometimes helps to let the bracket keep the filter snug as you loosen the releases.

Hi Klaus,
Thank you for your post. I tried what you said and it helped alot. I tested it and there was no leaks. I am surprised, how easy it was, except of course going under the car. Its hard to move around under there. Wish i could hoist the car up.

You are not done yet! You should have covered the fittings with new masking tape to keep the road dirt off. Just kidding, it is a cheap and easy DIY.

Replacing fuel filter on S70 S70

Hi Klaus,
I just put on the tape, i put enough to cover all the entrances on both sides so dirt wont get in there. Someone did that earlier so i copied them. But also i noticed there was alot of dirt under the car. Probably stuck to the undercoating.

Thank you for your help. Hope this will help someone else on the board too?

Yes, when you DIY, someone else will get the curage to do it also. That is wwhat the Brickboard is all about.

The factory puts the tape on the fittings to keep the undercoating from getting all over it.

Driving in rain gets most of the dirt off the under body. Do not 'wash' it with a brush or highpower sprayer. You do not want to damage any of the undercoating.

You done good!

Hi Klaus,
Thanks for the vote of confidence.
I notice my fuel filter is not leaking.
And the tape is still in place.

I love the brickboard!

Replacing fuel filter on S70 S70

I wanted to add something to my earlier post. I went out to www.volvospeed.com and found the following: According to the picture it said, " To remove the connectors pull in the direction of the green arrow, holding connector, it is hard but it will come off" What i dont know is if i pull on on end of the fuel filter connectors and it comes off that way? Or if i have to pull as the instructions say but on both sides of the fuel filter?

I notice the connector has a plastic sleeve that goes over the end of the fuel filter and i think it snaps on? If you rotate them they rotate freely and just spin around and around. I have never seen anything like this before. I never did this before so i am asking alot of questions in case i break something. Dont want to do that? I have a old volvo manual for the 850 but it says use a 17mm wrench but there is no such bolt like that on my 1999 S70.

In case anyone wants to see where i found the link for volvo speed here it is:
