Locks working right? 850 1997

Hi all. I'm not sure if this is a problem or not. I have 2 Volvo 850s. One is a '93 850 GLT and the other is a '97 850R. On the '93 850 GLT, I can open or lock ALL doors from either the driver door, or passenger door using the key. On the '97 850R, if I use the key on the driver door, only the driver door locks/unlocks. If I use the key on the passenger side door, it only locks/unlocks the passenger door. So what i'm asking is, did Volvo change the door lock mechanisms so that just the door with the key used locks/unlocks? One last question, is it possible for the remote door openers to just fail for no apparent reason? The remote for the '97 just stopped working....batteriesstill good, tried reprogramming. It still makes the small but audible beep when I press either buttons. Thanks!

Re: Locks working right? 850 1997

To reprogram a factory remote you must get into the vehicle and close all doors, trunk, etc... Put the key into the ignition and turn the ignition on and off 5 times, the 5th time leaving the ignition on. Within 15 seconds press the lock or unlock button on the remote, the light on the dash will flash quickly I think. If you have another remote to program you just press one of the buttons on it within 10 seconds. When done turn the ignition key off and everything sould work fine.

Re: Locks working right? 850 1997

Your newer car has what's called a "two stage locking system" and there should be details in your owners manual about it. Basically, it's done for security in that if you're in a parking lot (example) and you only want the drivers door unlocked so that someone else undesireable tryed getting into one of the other doors, they couldn't. I know.....what are the odds? but that's the story I was once told.

I'm not sure about the RF door locks functions in '97 as I think it changed in time depending on the year. The newer cars eliminated an outside RF door key lock and only have two (LF and truck, sedan).

Yes they changed them. Our 95 acts like your 93. The issue

is that if you open the driver door and the other door opens

it allows someone to jump in from the other door. That was

deemed a security risk. I think you can turn the key twice

to unlock all doors on the 97 (similar to pressing the unlock

button twice on the remote to unlock all doors).

I think there is a way to reprogram the remote on the 97

using some sequence with the cars' ignition key. Someone else will

have to post the details (I've seen it posted but don't know

what it is).
