head gasket replacement questions S70 1998

I have a 98 S70 T5 with 101k.

The car was run overheated and now the head gasket needs to be replaced.

The radiator has already been replaced.

I have been reading about this and have started the process.

I have several questions:

1) When removing the head, does both the top of the head come off together (I am assuming yes).

2) Which bolts are the ones to accomplish this as opposed to the ones that split the head.

3) I was going to fashion my own cam locking tool out of plywood and 3/16 diameter bolts. Has anyone done this?

4)I am at the point where I am trying to remove the exhaust manifold. The bolts are difficult to see. How many are there?

5) Do I need to remove the turbo to remove the exhaust manifold?

6) Is there any reason why I can not leave the manifold on and remove it with the head? I can remove it on the bench if I need to. I have access to an engine lift to help with the weight.

7)Does the same theory apply to the intake manifold?

8) I hear talk of a chemical gasket. What is this? Is it used along with the mechanical gasket?

9) The mechanical timing belt tensioner was replaced at 70k along with the timing belt. Does it need replaced now or will it last till 170k? I also read something about a temperature issue with installing this. Does anyone know about.

I know lots of questions, but knowing these things will be sure to help.

There are 2 parts to the head, which are glued together(chemical gasket). The top part contains the cams which require a lot of pressure to reinstall, so plywood will not work. A good piece of angle iron works to hold down the head.

You must remove the top of the head before removing the bottom of the head. There are procedures to take off the top part without breaking it. Do a search, others have done this and posted results.

I never counted exhaust bolts (9?), but you will need PBBlaster or some other penetrating oil to soften them up.

Yes, the intake manifold will come off.

Timing - make sure you align all timing marks before removing belt. The weak point is the tensioner for belts that are good for 105K miles. The manual tension is set to the ambient temperature at install time.

The Haynes 850 manual is applicable to your engine, use it.
