CV boot help 850

I recently found oil on my rims and discovered that I had a cracked CV boot. I guess all the salt water finally got to them. In any case can any one recommend a good replacement? I am more interested in CV boots not split boots. Does anyone make silicon boots? Any help would be very appreciated.

    Re: CV boot help 850

Volvo sells a replacement boot kit through parts. Each kit consists of 2 boots, grease and clamps for one side (complete axle). IMHO, they are not "fun" to replace compared to other FWD cars I've replaced CV boots on and it might be worth your while to just pay someone else to to it.

      Re: CV boot help 850

I went to the dealer today, which just changed ownership for the third time in one year, and they are no longer open on Saturday. So I preceded to Trak Auto and bought a CV boot for 16 dollars. Barring getting the half shaft off the job was fairly easy. I pulled the CV and thoroughly cleaned it before regreasing it and installing the boot. Thanks for the tip and when the nest one goes, looks like the boots is suffering now, I will hopefully have the Volvo kit handy. Thanks for the tip. As a side note I opted to replace only the boot because I know for a fact the boot had only been leaking for less then 10 miles and I recently installed new CVs.

Charles- how long did the original CV's last? And what do you figure it cost to replace them? Did you do it yourself?

I'm also curious, if you just replaced them, why a craked boot so soon?

        regards,

        claude

It's easy to remove the axel. It's pain in the butt to remove the snap ring to take CV apart. You can buy special tool to remove the snap ring at Pepboy. Next time I will replace the whole axel. It's only $45 with exchange at one of the parts stores near where I live. Goodluck.

I live on the water so I see lots of salt water despite the garage and constant washing. The original boot lasted about a year, 7000 miles. I had one replaced for 100 or 105 by Midikei(sp) once. This time I did it myself. The boot cost 16 dollars and the grease about 10. I would take it to a shop if you have not worked with CVs before.
