Ignition switch bad, mechanic wants to replace steering column?? 850 1993

Good morning, A friend out of state has a 1993 Volvo 850 with 150K on it and after some starting issues was told by his mechanic that the ignition switch was bad and that the entire column needed to be replaced. Having not worked on any 850's does this seem right to anyone? Thanks in advance, Greg

I called my friend back and he says the key is binding in the column, so it sounds like the key and tumblers may be the culprit. Anything unusual with replacing the key and tumbler unit in this car?

He needs to find another shop, ASAP! The electrical portion of the ignition switch is easily replaced after removing the plastic clamshell around the steering column, held by 4 torx screws.

Usually diagnosed by wiggling the key a little and watching the dash lights flicker.
