If you have a PC laptop, there is software and a cable you can purchase to scan just about everything. While the engine is running, it will collect data which can be looked at later and analyzed.

The Brits have been playing with OBD codes for decades, so take a look at this forum and do a search. Remember, their steering wheel is on the other side.

The Scan Gauge II is a handy little instrument that you can use to scan codes and also monitor several car parameters like coolant temperature, oil temperature, voltage, etc. I use it as I drive. It also has mpg and economy calculations, but I have not tried those functions.
