855 starter relay? 850

My 855 won't start.

Put in the key and turn and it doesn't crank.

Christmas tree on the dashboard.

Fuel pump active.

Sometimes I'll get a click like a relay and sometimes not.

I've seen a number of references to a "starter relay" but no instructions on where it is.

Help?!

Relay? Mmmm, perhaps you mean soleniod, which hangs on the side of the starter. Check the battery voltage, it must be above 10V to excite the starter.

If the battery is 11V+, then you could have a loose wire at the starter or battery. Just be careful, the starter has live wires and can bite your fingers!!

If you want to check the starter relay, it's located next to the fuse box under the hood. I have a '94 850, and to get to the relays I had to remove the screws that hold the cover around the fuse box to expose the relays. They are cabin-side of where the fuses are. I'm not sure exactly how to bench test that relay, but if you can find a schematic on it, then you may be able to use some current and a meter to find out if it's working.
