Shiftpoints with cold engine V70-XC70 1998

My 98 V70 (turbo) automatic has always shown the following pattern: When the engine is cold, upshifts occur at higher RPMs than when the engine is at normal operating temperature. For example, even using very light throttle, shift from 1st to 2nd usually takes place after seeing 3-3.5K in 1st. If the person does not use light throttle, it reaches 4K easily in 1st gear. This is particularly noticeable after start up in freezing conditions.

Questions:

1) Does anybody else experience this pattern ?

2) Do you think this is an intended design pattern programmed by Volvo ? If so, why force the engine to go to higher RPMs precisely when engine wear is happening at the highest rate ? What is the logic ?

3) If this is not an intended "programming" of the gearbox by Volvo, could this simply be caused by the ATF being thicker when cold and this in turn making upshifts occur at higher RPMs ?

Thanks,

Andy

Listen to Fjord. He is correct. It is a strategy to warm up catalytic converter more quickly. The only ATF oil temp related strategy is the lack of locking torque converter until fluid goes over 125F.

But, isn't it bad to "race" a cold engine? I've always been concerned that the oil doesn't have time to reach all the engine's parts - especially when cold.

Arby......I tell you what to do.

First, set your alarm clock to wake you up 5min. sooner than it does now.

Now you will have the extra 60/90 sec. to warm your car up to at least opp. temp. *BEFORE* you drive off......now was that so hard?

BTW: dont bother with one of those stupid remote starters....can you say bad idea? Lets just say the oil pres. light went on when you started the car from the living room(cant see it from there right?).....now you shit-can a good engine just because you did not have time to *warm up the car before you drive off*

        good luck and happy Thanksgiving,

Don't worry...this will not harm the engine.

You are really onto a normal design function of the car. The reason for the delayed shifts (higher RPM) is so the cat. conv. can reach operating temp ASAP. Think of the trans. helping the engine management system do that. Purely done to reduce emissions.
