06 XC70 fuel door not latching V70-XC70

My wife went to fill up the XC70 today and pressed the release button inside first... message came up saying fuel door open... or something like that. When she opened the fuel door, it opened easily but a piece of black plastic shot out. Now the fuel door will not latch. The latch pin on the fuel door appears to be intact, so my guess would be that the solenoid latch inside the car has broken.

Has anyone else run into this and have a solution?

Thanks!

Your hinge is broken. The spring holds the door closed so the latch can engage the tab on the door. That black piece of plastic that shot out is probably the retainer for the spring. Hinge runs about $16

      Bob,

I replaced the hinge assembly this evening and the door now slams shut like a Venus Fly Trap. That being said, the latch solenoid is still "intermittent" at best, but I don't know how the SW is written in the car for delays and so on. I'll check the lock latch again tomorrow and report back.

Note that on the IPD website that most comments about installing the new hinge were focused on the four pins that seem to "snap off" instead of go in. My biggest issue was snapping the new hinge onto the gas door hinge pin, it took significant force. I also had to "maul up" the plastic hinge pinch points on the old hinge plate to get it to come off the door with a large flat head screw driver. Not an easy job, but not horrible either.

Thank you for the input, it helped a great deal!

My wife's 03 did the same thing. I trouble shot the problem to a faulty dash switch as I wasn't getting the 12 Volts DC going to the solenoid. I was told by the dealer that I would have to replace the whole headlight/fuel door switch assy. For now, I just pulled out the solenoid and close the door until I feel like paying the $$$'s to replace the switch...
