AM Radio Stopped Receiving? S60 2009

Today, when returning from a road trip with the family, we turned the radio to the AM band to check for traffic reports, only to find no reception. Did a "Scan" and the radio would not pick up any AM stations. I tried both AM1 and AM2, nothing. FM works, CD player works. The car is just over a year old with low mileage and has had no problems what-so-ever to date. We love the car.
Can anyone shed some light on this problem? Anything I should check?
If I go to the dealership, this will be our first warranty claim.
I have added an image of the car (it's my wife's car) because I think it looks pretty awesome.....!

    Dealer Response S60 2009

Took the car to the Dealership this morning. They had the car for 1/2 hr. Service guy came out and told me they are ordering a new radio. Unfortunately, the radio is currently back-ordered and could be some time (month maybe) before it arrives. They will call me when the new radio arrives at which time I'll make an appointment to have it installed...

      New Radio Installed S60 2009

Got a call from the dealerhsip yesterday. The radio has arrived.
They installed it today and all is working again. It was exactly one week ago that it was taken in for diagonosis. Glad we didn't have to wait months for the the new radio!

I know this is a bit off-topic but, my 17 year old 850 just started losing the FM reception. I just give the right side of dash a good open palm slap and it comes on. No warranty so I'll live with it until my hand gets sore. Checked all plugs at rear and they are connected. Must be an internal something?

I don't know, but I'd guess that maybe on your trip you might have hit the antenna. You could dislodge the AM connections or damage the wire somewhere when the trunks full and your taking turns.. With my limited knowledge of Canada (I've only been to BC and YT) sharp turns are inevitable!

That's an interesting thought because the trunk has indeed been full of luggage and stuff, packed to the limit on recent vacations the last two weeks. Are you telling me the antenna connections can be found in the trunk? I'll take a look in the trunk and see if anything is disconnected. Can you tell me where to look?
      TIA

        Stealing thread S60 2009

        TonyG,

Another Canadian from Grimsby is having a few issues. "YBNORMAL" is looking for a good reasonable garage to replace both axles, the indies s/he goes to will only install OEM at a very high price. Plus wanting to replace the brake vacuum booster.

I think she needs a second opinion. From a good shop. Or she sells her car.

Could you look at her post?

Hmm, where exactly indeed. When I posted I thought it had something nearer the CD changer. Looking at a map it appears that it runs down the drivers side (blanking on the word here) but side runners then up with the wheelwell. Then it goes up the frame and is mounted hidden away in the roof frame.

I think your best shot at finding anything would be somewhere between where your seat folds (they still do that right.. the 850 is clouding the mind..) and the front most portion of the trunk, drivers side..

Here's a diagram of how the wire runs..

The cable is hidden its entire length. Even in the trunk area it is in the fender behind the 'felt' cover. I don't think any kind of jarring with luggage would cause it to loosen.

I agree. I just took a look in the trunk and everything is neat and tidy and tucked away. No visible cabling whatsoever.
I'll post back when I get results from the dealership.

The real reason to take it to a dealer, besides cost, is that the problem and solution will be reported back to the company. Volvo needs to know what goes wrong and how to best fix it.

Nice car! It is so new that a dealer is required, and free.

AM Radio Stopped Receiving? S60 2009

I have made an appointment for Thursday, 8a.m. at my local Volvo Dealership. My Volvo's are maintained by my own technicians (Volvo Master Technicians - Independent) that I have been with for over 20yrs. The thought of actually going to a dealership for servicing is scary....but this is a warranty issue.
The service advisor admitted that older S60's were famous for lousy AM reception, but hasn't come across the AM band failing completely. He asked if anyone had been in the back of the radio where the antennas are plugged in, in the event they had become unplugged. Of course no one has touched this car other then oil changes since the car was new. I told my wife they will likely just replace the radio. Who Knows.
I'll let everyone know what the outcome is, in the interest of better understanding these highly complex cars and what can go wrong.

FWIW, this car was featured in the VCOA Rolling Magazine as the last S60 off the production line as we know S60's. The S60 was not sold in 2010 and everyone is anticipating the new 2011 S60 which is supposed to be even smaller then its predecessor.
