Apparent fuel injection problem S60 2001

While I was up at the Gilmore having a great time an associate was using our 2001 S60T5.
It started giving him problems of bogging down, not accelerating when given the gas, black smoke, etc.
He took it to a local mechanic who does NOT specialize in Volvos (at my direction -
Tulsa is 40 miles away and the car was not that driveable).
The mechanic told me after I got back that it was giving code P1171.
He had put in a rebuilt mass airflow sensor, cleared the code and it seemed great.
But in 20 miles it was doing the same thing again.
He cleared the code and it was good for another 20 miles and did the same thing again.
He does not have the VCT2000, and I don't think anyone in Bartlesville does.
He suspects that the oxygen sensor may have wiped out. He has one so he will put it in.
Does this scenario sound familiar to you guys? The dealer is about 45 miles away,
so I would like to avoid taking it to Tulsa if I can.
Meanwhile there are 4 of us trying to get by with one functional car that is fifteen hundred
miles late for its 150,000 mile service because of the 3400 miles we drove it the last couple weeks.
Thanks for any help you can give!

P1171 corresponds to ECM261A at the upper limit on your car. According to Volvo, these are the triggers for the Upper Limit:

    -intake air leakage
    -exhaust system air leakage
    -low fuel pressure
    -defective heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)

IMO its unlikely your O2 sensor's shot and only showing up with this code (not impossible, just usually there's a second one that makes it easier to diagnose..)

That leaves me to believe that if your mechanic has run a fuel pressure test (pretty likely) that a smoke test would be wonderful. I'd have to guess you have a leak somewhere (considering the age of your car it wouldn't surprise me you just have a cracked vacuum line) before I'd replace the O2 sensor. Now if the guy's willing to take back the parts if they're not the cause, then go right ahead..

Interestingly enough black smoke is from excess fuel, that makes it unlikely you've got low fuel pressure. Anyway here's volvo's take on your code..

    Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information

    Condition

The control module receives information from the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) about the fuel / air mixture when idling at both the lower and upper part-load range. If the fuel / air mixture deviates from λ=1, the short-term fuel trim will compensate for this by adjusting the injection time so that λ=1 is achieved. When the short-term fuel trim makes an adjustment, the integrator median must be adjusted by the long-term trim. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-261A will be stored when the long-term trim must be adjusted to almost maximum in the lower part load area.

    Substitute value
    none

    Possible source

    Upper limit:
    -intake air leakage
    -exhaust system air leakage
    -low fuel pressure
    -defective heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)

    Lower limit:
    -intake air leakage
    -high fuel pressure
    -leaking injectors
-defective mass air flow (MAF) sensor
    -contaminated engine oil
    -oil level too high
    -defective heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)

    Fault symptom[s]
    -none

I did not know that one could re-build a MAF. Quite sensitive they are. Most likely, that is it.

If you clear the code, the car should run again for a little bit and then go back into limp mode. Have your mechanic order an OEM MAF and plug that in.

It is almost time to recheck your vacuum lines for cracks in that 10 year old car.

      We'll czech for vacuum leaks.
      I understand that the MAFSensor is 280 218 045 / 9470640
For reasons not clear to me I am unable to find the P/N in VADIS.
But my 2001 V70T5 has the 280 218 108 MAFSensor which seems to be fairly common
and available from several sources, genuine Bosch, for fairly reasonable.
Can you tell me where to look in VADIS to find the MAFSensor p/n?
Do you know any reason why the 280 218 108 sensor would not work?
MANY thanks for your prompt response!!

I believe you can't find it because volvo calls it the Air Mass Meter (AMM for short) instead of the MAF. Because, well, their Swedish!

The one place I did find it, Component Location, called it a Mass Air Flow Sensor
but didn't give a part number.
I have looked through all the engine, controls, electrical and fuel system and have not found it
          under any name.

Sa,e MAF for all turbo engines S60 2001

Your S60T5 has the same MAF 0280218108 as your V70T. FCP Groton wants $125 for one, dealer wants $100 more.

I just do not understand rebuilds when you are not even allowed to touch the sensor with your fingers.

Same MAF for all turbo engines S60 2001

              That is what I thought.
FCPGroton has one on ebay for $99 w/free ship,
couple others have genuine Bosch cheaper.....
              Many thanks, Klaus.
