CV Boot 850 1995

After a strut mount problem I was informed that my passenger cv boot is leeking oil (which I noticed myself last week). Is this a serious problem and what are the side effects of not repairing it quickly. Lastly, how bi of a job is this in labor and parts.

I had the same problem, waited too long. Cost for repairing the boot only in the L side (independent Volvo mechanic) about $300; cost for replacing the CV joint because I waited too long (R side) about $550. I would not wait long if I were you...

Just for your future reference the job can be done yourself for about 40 dollars. In a pinch while out of town one time I had Midikie(sp) replace a boot for me. Cost was something like 130. There really is not much to replacing the boot. I would say most of the work is in cleaning the CV joint and re-prepping it. Took me two hours from start to finish.

If the grease has been flung out all over everthing, meaning you more than likely have a good size rip, then I'd plan in the near future to get it repaired. Labor rates are from 2-3 hours, and I don't recall the price of the Boot kit. If the leak isn't that bad then you have some time, subjective of course, but not a do it right now kind of thing.

You can buy the boot at any auto store for about 16 bucks. I just replaced mine like week before last. It took me about two hours. You need to get it fixed though before it starts to click. I believe a whole new CV and half shaft is close to 200.
