ENIGMA-STUMPED! ENGINE TURNED OVER THEN SPUN LIKE NO COMPRESSION 850 95

THIS ONE I COULD REALY USE HELP ON.

WENT TO START THIS A.M., AND THE ENGINE TURNED AS USUAL, THEN KICKED, THEN THE STARTER SPUN (I THOUGHT). TRIED AGAIN AND IT SOUNDED LIKE STARTER WAS NOT ENGAGING (SPIN HIGH PITCH).

OPENED THE OIL FILLER AND THE CAM WAS MOVING ON EACH TURNOVER BUT STILL SPINNING LIKE NO COMPRESSION.

TOOK TIMING BELT COVER OFF, AND STILL INTACT. NO WEAR THAT I COULD SEE ANYWAY. 70K(I KNOW NEEDS CHANGING, AND I THOUGHT IT BROKE).

IN THAT I HAD SPUN UP THE STARTER FOUR TIMES OR SO I THREW A 2 AMP CHARGER ON AND WENT INSIDE TO GET HAYNES MANUAL.

AFTER 10 MIN OF READING, I THOUGHT MAYBE THE CAM BROKE NEAR THE DIST. WHEN I WENT OUT AGAIN AND TURNED OVER, THERE WAS COMPRESSION AGAIN BUT ONLY KICKED OVER AFTER CONTINUED STARTER TURNS. FINALLY GOT A START AND AFTER ABOUT 3SEC OF RUN, THE ENGINE SETTLED AND RAN AS SMOOTH AS ALWAYS.

WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?

IS THERE SOME SYSTEM WHICH WOULD BYPASS OR OPEN EXAUST VALVES FOR COMPRESSION I DONT KNOW ABOUT?

THIS IS A TUFF ONE, THANK YOU SHOULD YOU HAVE ANY IDEA. THE CAR STARTS RIGHT UP NOW WITHOUT ANY MISFIRE OR INCIDENT.

    Thanks to you all.

    I have been running less rpm lately, due to needing to replace the timing belt. This description is exactly right in my case. The engine is still very strong when called on, but I have been driving without pressing the engine for about one month now.

    The only other change I have made, is I usually use Valvoline 10x40, this last time I used Penzoil 10x40 Z-7, and Pure Base. I wonder if the formula is contributing to deposits. This if the first 24 valve I have had.

    Go down the AWD/FWD forum postings until you find one by DRW on the 21st of nov titled "No start problem".

    There has been a lot typing already on this and you may find your no start fits exactly into a well-defined circumstance that will lead to tappets holding valves off seat enough to kill compression and result in no start.

    Peter,

    I'm no Tech but from what I've read here it sounds as if a valve is stuck open, due to carbon build up on the valve stem. Try some Techron Fuel system cleaner in a couple of tanks of gas and try the "Italian Tune-up" which is to run the car at 4000+ rpm for 10-15 minutes (keep it in low). this will help the valves loosen up and rotate, REALLY!

      Sounds logical but don,t keep it low. The official word from Volvo on the Italian tune up- 5000 rpm for 12 minutes. Watch the temp guage!

      thanks for pointing out my typo!

      Your diagnostic is completly reasonable. In that it runs without any problem now, short of the timing belt slipping, or cylinder wash it would have to be valve related. Ill get some Techron.

        Peter,

        I believe that if the timing belt slipped, your engine would be toast because the valves would hit the pistons.

          Russ/ Thanks for the post/the Fix is "No Start"post 850 95

          Thanks for the help. I knew if the belt had broken or shifted the car would never run, just glad to find it is related to valve stem build up.

          I do wonder, in that I just got lazy and used Pennzoil 10x40 with Z-7 instead of my usual Valvoline, if this has anything to do with the build up. No matter, Im changing Oil today to 10x30 for the winter. (Valvoline)
