frozen up horn ! 850 95

Wondering if anyone has come across this problem: while driving in T-giving traffic, I just "happened" to hit the horn. Well ... much to my joy at the time, the horn would not deactivate. Yes, driving in traffic, our horn sounded & sounded & sounded.

As heinous as it may seem to you, we both began laughing b/c it was so ridiculous at the time. (Yes, you can IMAGINE the looks! That's what was so funny.)

I pulled over when I found an exit (about 2 minutes!) & just unhooked both connectors. Ideas? (Please tell me it can't involve steering column / air bag labor-time.) Thanks.

Move to New York City and you have it made. Just kidding, it is very common, the problem is broken contacts inside the steering wheel for which Volvo wants a fortune (~$400). I've heard of people fixing themselves here on this board, do a search.

    Re: frozen up horn ! 850 95

I too had this problem when my 1994 850's horn froze up. The car was about 3-4 years old and I exceeded the 50,000 mile warranty by several thousand miles. The dealer contacted Volvo and they picked up the tab depite the warranty expired. I believe the replaced the steering wheel housing.

I have always had good experienced good customer service with Volvo. I am often surprised when I hear about dissastified customers who have purchased the S80 and complain about awful customer service. Perhaps Ford's ownership has changed the complexion of customer service.

Please forgive the many typo's contained in my previous reply. It is late on the east coast and I neglected to proof read my response. I am new to this forum, and appreciate the many useful pieces of information I have extracted from the postings. (I own an 850 and a new Cross Country.)

Mine did the same thing. The dealer had to replace the steering wheel. Supposedly the problem is the horn contacts on the wheel. Luckily it was under warranty when it happened to me...
