The ac in my car has been leaking all summer. They have filled it up twice to find the leak. It takes about 4 to 5 weeks for it to leak out. Well after taking it back for the 5th time to look for the leak they finally found that it is leaking at the evap core. I really do not want to spend that much money to repair it, so my question is, If I just leave it will it effect any other parts of the car? Thank you for your advice.

If it fails and you're going to wait it out (basically you're going to let it leak out to empty) seal off your compressor. Its still going to spin and keeping oil in it should keep it good enough to work when you put a new evap in. If the compressor dries out you can end up breaking the shaft which takes the drive belt with it. You don't want to have to deal with all that nonsense.. Oh, and keep the A/C off if you go this route, no sense tripping codes when it decides its not cold enough in the cabin...

Not sure when it was last replaced, I bought the car last october
I have one sitting here because I was planning on doing it myself. As far as the freon and stop leak, do you think I should wait untill the spring to do that? Seeing as I wont be using the ac much anymore. I live in RI.

You will want the AC operational due to your humid climate and the need to defrost the windshield.

NAPA sells the small can of stop-leak as well as the regular can of r134a. If the stop leak is not followed by the r134a, it can gum up the schrader valve and be a lot of trouble.

Wait a few weeks and then do it on a warm day. Let the can of r134a sit in the sun and warm up first, that way there is more pressure and you will probably use the whole can.

I hope you have replaced your cabin filter annually.

If you were to fill the AC yourself, you could get a small can of 'stop leak' that comes in a very small can, followed by a 12 oz can of r134a, the next time your AC gets real low. Just make sure you do not invert either can nor use the stop leak by itself. This is a one time shot to fix the leak.

Klaus
