1998 volvo s70 clutch feels like there is no Pressure/resistance S70 1998

So I went to go test drive a 1998 volvo s70, same exact car my dad has. I stall at first as it catches different than my dads. It has 89000 miles vs my dads 106000, not a big difference. He said he had the pressure plate recently done. Anyway as I press down on the clutch pedal it seems almost too easy. In my dads car there is some resistance. I was wondering if there is a problem? It goes straight down with little resistance in the car I just test drove.

The other thing is on the timing belt it says timing belt @ and then has the mileage crossed out. I ran a carfax and the last mileage was in 2001 about 56k and he said it was off the road for a couple of years. It drove fine and didn't slip but the timing belt mileage cross out and the clutch pedal made me weary. Also the e brake went up pretty high.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sat for some time? 2,000/year = sat for a long time!

Ask your Dad what it cost to have a new pressure plate installed, this clutch is too close to the floor. You will need to bleed the brake fluid and clutch servo.

Hard to 'see' the rear brake shoes without taking off the rotor. But new shoes and springs are fairly cheap. There is an adjustment nut in the center console which could be tried first.

All cars need to be 'driven' so that needed grease doesn't solidify and oil doesn't clog up engine passages.

Remove from the asking price:
Brake flush with synthetic
PS flush with synthetic
Tranny flush with synthetic
Coolant flush w/gallon of Volvo fluid ($35)
Air/fuel filter
Pressure plate install

Check the timing belt and acc belt for cracks.

Does the AC blow really cold air? That could be costly.

Klaus

yeah the ac blows pretty cold, same as my dads. His name is '740madness' by the way on this forum. He hasn't needed a pressure plate replacement as his clutch is just starting to go now at 105k. I did some reading up and I heard it could possibly be the master and or slave cylinder, I can do that with a friend of mine/ or my dad. Everything else was fine except for that timing belt issue. He said he has the receipts for the pressure plate and timing belt. It doesn't look like he rolled back the miles as it is a lot harder to do with a digital odometer anyway. He said while it was sitting he still drove it around. The body is in 9/10 condition just some fading on the rear wing. He had it up for $2850 then just posted it for $2150. I was just browsing craigslist and found it, I wasn't even expecting to buy a car but thats pretty cheap relative to the majority with 150k+ that are $3000+. He said he wouldn't take anything less. We got my dads for $1000 because the guy we bought it off of was buying a brand new car and didn't have space for two cars. The body has some dents and dings and the front struts mounts and timing belt needed to be done, so it comes out to be about the same. You don't find many s70 5speeds especially with under 90k. Do you think it is a good buy? Anything else to look for? I am going to check the fluids when I go back Friday with my pops but the car ran good besides that. There weren't really any sounds or any of that.

Normally, the clutch lasts 200K+ miles. I also suspect the slave cylinder needs something.

Of course it needs a second look, especially with your Dad.

If you do buy it, clean the PCV valve and hoses. Then take it for a mild test run, keep the rpms below 4,000. This car needs to be treated like a brand new engine and broken in all over again. Sitting is bad for the valve springs and rings. Don't go over 5,000 rpm for the first tank, and never wind it up in first gear.

Your Dad knows all of the problems that can pop up on a V70. Good luck,

Klaus

Alright thanx. Yeah the clutch on the car I drove felt good and grabs tight. Do you think its a solid deal?
