What's an air pump and what does it do? 850 1997

At my 30K service told the service tech that I had been hearing a whining noise on start-up which quits after about a minute (No, it's not my wife, her whining wouldn't stop after only a minute!). Diagnosed as a bad (shorted out) air pump, replaced under warranty. What does this thing do?

Thanks!

It is an electric pump that forces air into the exaust system for up to 2 minutes after a cold start. It's purpose is to continue the combustion process in the exaust system to heat the catalytic converter faster to reduce emissions.
