What are the T5 wagons selling for stateside now? 850 97

I've been out of CONUS since 12/98 and haven't been able to follow the market on the 850 wagons. I can track "asking prices" online but wonder if you could offer some feedback on "real selling prices". I realize condition/mileage/area of the country all factor in, but just a general feel for how these Turbos are regarded in terms of availability on dealer used car lots and personal sales would be great!

My lil' red wagon continues to perform flawlessly here on the fast and furious stadas and strasses of Europe. If the front discs would just last a bit longer than 15K!!

Keep rolling.

Try Edmunds. They seem to have more realistic transaction prices than Kelley, NADA, etc., which seem to list the "asked" rather than the "selling" price.

Also, I this past summer I observed that Italian drivers seem to drive faster with speed limits than German drivers drive without any speed limits! Thoughts?

      AutoStrada Etiquette 850 97

It is always refreshing to finally hit the Italian roadways after a trip outside of Italy to other Euro countries. The speeds do seem to increase and driving becomes more intimate (read closer!)

The Italian Polizia are now deploying mobile cameras that snap pix of speeders on the main freeways (limit is 130 kph) and sending out hefty fines. An Italian friend of mine was ticketed by one of these remote unmanned units -clocked at 180kph- $600 fine and loss of license for 6 months!!

So the further south you drive the less likely you are to be ticketed. All in all, these folks are super drivers because the flow demands it! It'll be a tough transition to make when we return to South Carolina in 2002. Guess I'll just ride my Vespa!

      Ciao,

It is also amazing and scary WHAT cars Italians drive at 140-160 kmph. I've seen tiny ugly cars (Ford had the ugliest model) passing me on the left lane VERY fast, while I has driving "slow" 140 kmph. I did not see many Volvos there, BTW. I guess they are too big.

          You are right, Yuri -

there is a craze in Europe about small cars with super engines (over 200hp) which makes them aluminum foil rockets. The Seat (Volkswagen models) are strong here.

The nasty thing is visiting the scrapyards and seeing the wrecks of these small tins. When you see the engine or front wheel pushed on to the front seat while the windshield is still intact - you know why Volvo left the Dutch DAF models (300 series). Small fast cars do not appeal to the same audience as safe cars. The 850 is/was a break in Volvo Policy.

Volvo is quite expensive - and has still a little "Uncle Olaf" image.

You have to work almost a lifetime and have a family before you can afford and appreciate a Volvo :) - in Denmark, it was a joke that only engineers rode Volvo's - they don't buy the sales talk, they buy the facts - and are very hard to please because of big demands to the car. Recognize anything ? ;)

(By the way - the Danish AAA picks up an incredible amount of danish cars just south of the German border - many Danes floor the cars when they go south the border between Denmark and Germany which has almost free speed. The cars do not last long after a life with US-like speed regulations - and then beeing floored. Norwegians arriving by ferry in Denmark also has some incredible accidents on the first few miles on the straight Danish road - because they seldom have flat open road in front of them.)

And yes - Ford took a chance on design - and paid the price. The Edsel ghost got a new face. They had to stop selling the topmodel - it was ugly.

Seen in the light of this - it was natural to buy Volvo to have a share of the upper market.

(The new Mercedes C series headlights has a little of the fatal Ford look)
