850 water pump 850

Haynes says to use some Volvo hydraulic sealing compound on the
waterpump bolts. Others say just bolt it in?
Whats the best way?

Bill

I've done 2 water pumps on mine. First replacement from Volvo dealer came with new bolts that had some stuff on them. 2nd was from Aisin, bought aftermarket and I sealed the bolts with silicone sealant. 2nd pump installation showed noticeable leakage. I snugged up the bolts a couple of times over a couple of days and the leak went away. Maybe either the sealant or the gasket settled in a bit.

On some blocks (I am talking about all cars, not just Volvos), fastener holes come dangerously close to water passages. Sometimes, because of various issues like casting porosity, there can be leakage around certain bolts. As a precaution, some manufactures use sealants on bolts that are subject to to these issues.

I have no idea if that is the case here.

But if there is such a thing as Volvo Hydraulic Sealing Compound and if you have found a recommendation to use something like that, then I would use some sort of sealant on those bolts. I would think that regular pipe dope, or Silastic, would be sufficient.
