Help, suspension very noisy, nearly lost control at 70 on freeway! 850 94

Help, my sister borrowed the car 3 months ago and the night it came back, there was a slight rattle coming from the front end(SRS light came on at the same time). Now the rattle is very loud(sounds like the front end is going to fall off). I was on my way to Austin yesterday and at 70(on the road for an hour) the steering wheels started yanking to the right hard (like the right front wheel was grabbing something). I nearly lost control because it was a sudden suprise. It stopped at about 50mph. Can anyone help me?????? I lifted the front and the ball joints and tie rods are ok.

Your problem sounds pretty serious, I'd go have it checked at the dealer. The only possible things I can think of is:

    a) your sister might have nailed a pothole and bent something not readily visible -- that may cause the SRS light to activate from some electrical shorts, etc...) Although if she hit something big enough to do that, she'd know it!

    b) wheel bearing is toast -- my buddy's Explorer came to a rather unexpected grinding and violent right-hand yanking halt when a wheel bearing let go once. It seized solid and they had to get it towed. He's lucky it didn't flip! He remembered hearing squeaking and rattling in the preceeding days, but just thought it was a typical Ford...

    c) a brake problem? Far fetched, by hey, maybe...

Good luck & let us know the prognosis! And for God's sake, get it looked at before you have to test the crumple zones the hard way!!

I have heard many mechanics say that the right side wheel bearings are subject to premature failure on 850 turbos. The problem that you describe can be one of many things, but none the less you are looking at a decent repair. One thing to look for is metal shavings and grease collecting on the inside of the wheel. If you have anything beyond a thin residue, chances are it is the wheel bearing or CV joint. (It is not common though for a CV joint to cause too much friction while going straight. It is more likely to be a wheel bearing or hub.) It could also be a brake problem, I have heard of similar problems under very extreem circuimstances, but I find it highly unlikely. If your sister did hit something, there should be evidence of that on the wheel and tire. Good luck finding the problem and please let me know what the problem was. I would look at the wheel bearing first though.

      Thanks

Re: Help, suspension very noisy, nearly lost control at 70 on freeway! 850 93

        A third possibility is possible:

When I bought my 1993 850, it was a little sloggy and noisy at high speeds.

When I had driven it for a week, I found out that all 4 bolts holding the steering frame to the chassis were missing. Vibrations can cause them to get loose I guess. Luckily I am a careful driver, and had not had any heavy strain to the car...

I have torn up CV boots on both sides. It hasnt grabbed since the trip to Austin but it shakes like crazy past 55 now(I go short trips). The cvs look like they need replacing. Also, the car has 141,000 miles on it. Thank you both, I apreciate the help.

Blown boots and you now have cv joints trying to redirect your car to the bluebonnets. I would say your sister blew the boots, but with 140k on any car, the boots needed inspecting A long, long time ago. It is kinda like flying a 737 without looking under the "hood" fo about a week. Volvos are kind of like planes. They do their job well, require a certain amount of care and will last forever if you take proper care of the car. the ozone of central Tex got to the rubber. Se if Pep Boys can get you a set of re-maned axles (last set I bought were $89/side fo 1991 Honda). Good luck...

How would you like to fly in that 737 with Pep Boys fan blades in the engines, or Pep Boys landing gear?

I would just go with the Volvo OEM parts......unless I was like real real sure somebody "after-market" had a better part....and this goes for all parts...not just the critical ones.

            I am quite anal though......no

If it's your CV joint, then you're lucky. It's cheaper to fix that than a hub ($300 to $400?).

If you're not going to do it yourself (i.e., no labor cost) then it's cheaper to replace the whole axle. I got a quote from my Volvo dealer for replacing an axle for about $200 (including 1 to 1.2 hour labor). Or, you can buy one from Carparts.com for $70 and do it yourself or have a independent do it. Mine turned out nothing is wrong.

          Good luck!

Ed, Glad to hear that you found the problem. Also glad to hear that it was indeed NOT the hub. If you have the tools and time, repalce the axles your self but be sure and get the parts from a respectable AP store. Buy from the dealer and pay more but you are ensured good quality. Hey, even ask for a wholesale price, my dealer is nice and does the same for me. Never buy from Trak Auto or Pep Boys, I have replaced every 1/2 shaft that I have bought from them in the past due to pre-mature failure.
