engine temperature and heater relationship 850 1997

It was -10 degrees Celsius (that's about 20 fahrenheit) in Toronto today. I drove my car for 30 minutes and the temperature gauge was still not up to normal. When I turned the heater off, it went up to normal. When I turned it back on, the engine temperature dropped. Is this normal???? Oh yah... the engine warning light went on again (I'm beginning to despise that thing!!! I just had the 2 oxygen sensors replaced because of that stupid light but I'm beginning to think that it was a misdiagnosis)

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

This looks like a bad thermostat. I had similar problem, not as extreme, but it was only -1C. New thermostat fixed it.

replacing the engine thermostat 850 1997

Can anyone tell me how to replace the engine thermostat on my 1997 850 GLT? Where can I buy a thermostat? Can I get a good one without going to a Volvo dealer? (I live in Toronto)

Yep and if the T-stat is faulty enough, it can "falsely" trigger an engine coolant temp (ECT) sensor code too. I say "falsely" because if it's a bad T-stat only, you don't then need a ECT sensor as well.
