850 Turbo Anti-Freeze Questions 850 1995

I have a 1995 850 Turbo and live in Michigan. The antifreeze seems to be a dull, greyish color which got me alarmed. I looked in the manual and it said it should never need changing. The car has 59,000 on it and I don't want to do any damage.

Whats in this thing, Dex-Cool?

What color should it be?

Tom

Change it. It should be green or orange. Not grey. I always use Prestone's coolant. It works with ethelene glycol or dexcool. Thats the short simple answer to your queation. I change mine ever 30k or so.

The only Volvos that had liquid cooled Turbos as a stock option were some of the 240’s and 700 series cars.

Beyond that they are all oil cooled. If yours is truly, liquid cooled then the color of the antifreeze should

Be the same as the antifreeze in your radiator. This color can vary between brands.

          Thanks for your feedback.

I am talking about the antifreeze in my engine. Is the color supposed to be bright green (standard antifreeze 50/50) or orange (Dex Cool)?

I need to know if this engine antifreeze needs to be changed. The manual states: "Normally, the coolent does not need to be changed". Upon further investigation, I see that Volvo's use a special antifreeze.

First off: what color is it supposed to be (mine is grey)?

Second: how do you know if it truely does need to be changed?

Standard antifeeze lasts around 20-30,000 miles while DexCool will go 100,000.

          Thanks

          Tom

            Thomas;

"Upon further investigation, I see that Volvo's use a special antifreeze."

My personal experience with one reputable Volvo dealer around my locale is that this so called "Volvo special antifreeze' is nothing but Prestone's. I have inquire about this with this service manager and he pointed to the yellow plastic container that spelled Prestone. 30000 miles is a good bench mark for changing your antifreeze.

The recommended antifreeze is Volvo OEM, available only from Volvo. While Volvo doesn't publish an antifreeze change schedule, most mechanics that post on this board think it should be changed every two or three years. There is disagreement as to whether or not DexCool is a good substitute for the Volvo stuff, but it should be okay if the engine and radiator are carefully flushed before refilling. I've used DexCool in my 850T for several years without any noticible ill-effect.

Volvo's Antifreeze is dark green almost blue I would as a habit change it

about 100,000 miles, if it's gray then it sound as if cooling system

may have been compromised and should be pressure tested by the dealer.
