skid school in Ontario 850 1997

The Toronto Star Dec 9 edition featured an article in the Wheels section titled "Looking ahead is key to avoiding a collision" (see the link below). Along with tips about avoiding a collision, the article mentioned a 2 day skid school that is being run in various locations around southern Ontario. I have signed up for the Feb 3-4 session in Barrie, Ontario.

Re: skid school in Ontario 850 1995

$200 for a skid control class is a good deal, especially we're talking CAD.

I don't agree with the article regarding the wheel lockup and using the threshold braking though... because 850s are equiped with 4-wheel ABS! I noticed that a lot of driving schools are too slow to adapt to new technology. With the DSTC, they'll need a whole new instructions! For example, you're suppose to let the computer to fix the problem instead of you trying to correct it with steering. Hmm... I see new business opportunity for driving class designed for high-end cars with ABS & DSTC! Then I'll try to get Volvo, BMW, and Mercedes to endorse my business.

But anyway, since we don't have DSTC, please let us know how the class goes. My wife and I might be interested to attend (my wife totalled our 1995 854 Turbo 10 months ago due to skid-related accident on icy road)

1995 854 Volvo GLT 178k miles.

Re: skid school in Ontario 850 1997

Mr Yuk (aka Yaw Mak, n'est-ce pas?)

At this point, I have simply requested an information package that describes the content of the course. I have been told (by someone other than the course leader) that cars are supplied. If the cars are not equipped with ABS, then I suppose instruction on threshold braking is appropriate. Ideally, I would prefer to use my wagon for the course.

The newspaper article might not be reflective of the approach of the skid school. I will let you know. Tony Giverin has requested that I write an article for the CVC newsletter, and I have agreed to do that.

Re: skid school in Ontario 850 1996

Neil,

I just send off my application to attend the skid school.

They provide the vehicles for the course.

It covers two days, 4 hours each day. You have the option to attend the morning (8:00 am to noon or 1:00 pm to 5:00pm.).

They say that 3 1/2 hours each day are spent behind the wheel.

Cost is $200.00 CAN. plus $14 GST.

I spoke with Gary Magwood about the course regarding cars with ABS and auto vs. standard. He told me that all of their vehicles (mix of sedans, vans and sport UTEs) are late model meanining that they will have ABS and be automatic. He assured me that he will cover crash avoidance without ABS and standard transmissions.

Hope this helps.

Purm

Re: skid school in Ontario 850 1997

Hey Neil!

Why not share your experience with the 850 and write an article for the CVC? I wanted to e-mail you direct, but you didn't include your e-mail with this posting....

Re: skid school in Ontario S70 1998

Tony,

Hi. Somewhat off subject.

Did you want me to write an article for CVC on my experience with an accident in Ontario and the absolutely superior assistance and service I received starting with Neil Evans through Glen & Edna Fenwick and finally to Bruno & Vince Persichetti?

E-mail address?

Bryan
