'03 V70 Dead Dashboard cluster V70-XC70

Hi All: I have a 2003 V70 Turbo with AWD (not an XC)that has a completely DEAD instrument cluster. The problem started 18 months ago and has gotten progessively worse to where I now have nothing working on the dash; no speedometer, no gas gauge, no anything.

The symptoms started with the dashboard periodically, for a split instant, goes dead but the car keeps running normally. When it comes back on all the indicator lights turn on as if I was just going to start the car, but I’m still driving along. Periodically these “shutdowns” are also accompanied by a loud beep that seems to be coming from the left side of the dashboard.

Last year, when the problems first started I went to my local Volvo dealer and they were of no help, so I went on Just Answers.com and was told that the problem is likely one of the 4 primary solder points on the back of the instrument cluster was bad. My local mechanic re-soldered them but that seemed to do very little to solve the problem.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

    I'm considering the purchase of an 03 V70 n/a 5spd manual that has the same issue...so far the trip computer is out of service.

    Klaus what is a DIM? SHould I move forward with the purchase considering? Will this be expensive?

    Thx!

      Hi,
      DIM=Driver info Module.
      Maybe you didn`t read my thread but XeModex.com is probably your best source. My wife`s 03 XC70 had the DIM go south 2 yrs ago....took it to the dealer which cost $2 grand. Found out later via Klaus about XeMoDex. A rebuild is approx $500 CDN.
      Do the math!

    Hi,
    Klaus is right! Wife`s 03 XC70 had same problem last year when the DIM went south. We didn`t know about Xemodex at the time so had it replaced at the dealer:$2000. Ouch!!
    Watch out for ABS module next! Dealer replacement is approx $1800-Xemodex cost is $500 CDN.
    Good luck!

    Sounds like your DIM died. Read the above link and either email or call XemodeX on Monday. It is a Canadian outfit with a good reputation, and not a bad price.
