TRACS and ABS lights??? 850 1997

Coming into my driveway after a light snowfall I spin my front tires attempting to get up the drive. No big deal, right? Wrong. Wheels stop spinning after 4 to 5 seconds as I remove my foot from the accelerator and my "TRACS OFF" and "ABS" light come on. I then pulled into the garage and flipped the TRACS switch back and forth a couple of times, nothing. The lights remain on. I then backed the car out of the drive and went around the block once accelerating and braking to see if this will return things to normal, no such luck. ABS had definitely shut down. Any ideas on what has happened to my beloved 850. Any recommendations or suggestions. Will I be making a trip to the Dealer? Thanks for your input.

Re: TRACS and ABS lights??? 850 1997

Your lights being on indicate you have set a code in the ABS/tracs system, if there is a code set, the system is disabled. The trip to the dealer is needed to have the codes read with the Volvo Scan Tool. (VST)

Re: TRACS and ABS lights??? 850 1997

The only visual clues to my problem are the TRACS and ABS lights. The physical clue would be that when braking hard, I can tell that the ABS system is non-operatioinal. Nothing else. Is there any other information that I can give that would be helpful in determining the cause and possible solution? Thanks for your help. Scott

My -97 855R did exactly the same thing a couple of times. When I brought the car in for service, Volvo replaced the ABS control module and the system has behaved perfectly ever since. I've seen quite a few problems like this and my guess is that a bad batch of ABS control modules where installed on the -96-97 850 model. The part# for the unit is: 8602266-2
