Cost of replacing a s70 clutch S70 1998

Hi All

Clutch went. Its just turning at this point. Should not have let my kids drive the car.

Anyway. Quotes seem pretty high. all seem to quote 8 hours in labor and roughly 300 for parts.

give or take a $1000 total.

Believe labor is set from alldata, since 8 hour quotes are the same.

I'm around NY/Westchester area. Anyone have recommendations for a place possibly cheaper?

Madness

$300 for parts sounds like a very reasonable price. I paid $400 for a kit, which was the best price I could find at the time, although now I see them advertised in the $300 range. My point is, if a shop is willing to sell you the parts for $300 (rather than the list price of $600), they are probably treating you fairly on the labor too. Be sure that they resurface the flywheel. (And, with the flywheel off, why not do the rear main seal?)

Meanwhile, the kit sits in my garage, because I just can't bring myself to undertake that massive job, but I won't pay someone else to do a job i can do myself. So far, it still works fine, but engages very close to the top and acts unhappy going uphill in stop & go traffic in 100+ degree plus weather. My car has 114K miles of mostly local driving, including the last 18 months of teenage girl driving. I'm astonished that it went past 80K and even more impressed that people are reporting 130K and up out of the clutches. Volvo certainly did something right with these clutches.

I have had great success with the prices at carolina clutch. They seem to be the cheapest around.

My daughter has a dual mass on her g35 which goes for 1100. I got the same as the dealers equipment Luk for 500. Try them in the future.

Don't come to the TwinCities, last I checked was over $1200.

It is labor intensive... The tranny has to come out, which means the right side suspension has to be removed first, then the subframe lowered.

Ask about replacing the RMS while they are in there, not much additional labor to remove the flywheel and clean things up.

Must Volvo clutches last over 200K miles. Not bad considering other makes that barely get 100K on a clutch.

Of course, you have checked the slave cylinder for proper functioning...

If you are going in that far, I'd replace the slave cylinder regardless of its condition. You don't want to go through all that disassembly again for a very long time.
