AW50-42 transmission 850 1994

I recently installed a trans( AW50-42) from a 1998 model into my 1994 850. The two trannies are the same except for the speed sensors. The 1994 is located at the lower rear while is mounted on top. The sensors are both two wire but have different connectors. Can I wire the 1998 sensor into my harness with the proper connector and make it work? If I install the sensor from the 1994 trans. will there be any corresponding signal for the sensor to read? If anyone has any experience with such a swap I would appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks

    I'm having my doubts it'll work but the only person here who's likely to know that one in detail is "Abe".

    The reason being is that yes, two different fuel systems PLUS the later type gets its vehicle speed from an ABS sensor and through the ABS ECU instead. Volvo changed the systems completely.

    I have my doubts that it can be retro-fitted ("rigged") in any way to work as there's a whole lot more to it than just swapping connector pins.

    I think you'll need to get a reman '94 trans and forget about the '98 trans as you'll have too many problems otherwise (not to mention dash lights (codes) that will never go away and it'll probably be stuck in "limp home mode" too, always).

    Keep us posted on the outcome. I had heard that at least for the year 1993, a newer model trans could NOT be substituted. It would bolt up, but the electronic computer codes were incompatible.

    I too have a 94 850 and am wondering why you have changed the tranny on your car to a 98 model? Why not replace it with the original from the year of manufacture? Just wondering if there is an advantage to the new tranny that we did not have?

      The reason that I changed to a 1998 model was that I had a timing belt failure which caused extensive damage to the engine. I found a wrecked 1998 with only 1500 miles on it, so I decided to change the whole unit.

        So you have a 1998 engine? And a 1998 ECU (computer)?

          No. I do not have the ECU from the 1998. I swapped the intake and sensors from the 1994. The trans sensor is the only problem at the moment.

        Just curious - why T-belt failure? It was not replace on time or just failed? What mileage was on your car when this happened?

          The timing belt did not break but it slipped and put the system out of time. I suspect that the hydraulic tensioner was at fault. The mileage at the time was 270 K.

            "270K" (270,000 miles) with its original T-belt tensioner? That'd be my guess as to the cause as well. They are rumored to weaken in time mandating replacement AND if the T-belt is serviced at a dealership (where they have a $500 tool that measures T-belt tension BEFORE it's replaced, advised especially with higher mileage), someone should have checked and noticed that and suggested a new tensioner.
