Test Blower Motor Controller? 850 95

The blower motor on our '95 855T (90k miles) failed after making noises for a few days in cold weather. There is a "411-blower fan seized or drawing excessive current" code on the B1 connector. I have a replacement motor and a time over the holidays to make the changeover.

In research here and at Volvospeed, and in the Haynes manual, there are references to a "controller", "power stage" and "heater fan motor resistor." A few messages said it should be tested and/or replaced when the blower motor is changed.

If I am replacing the blower motor, and "B1-411" is the only diagnostic code, should I still worry about the "controller"? If the controller was bad, wouldn't I get the "B1-418-no control signal to blower fan power stage" or the "B1-419-faulty diagnostic signal from blower fan power stage"?

....Merry Christmas, Rich S.

Re: Test Blower Motor Controller? 850 95

Being that the blower motor is noisy (not inop), I'd just replace the motor only for now. Your car should have ECC and that resistor costs about $110 (not cheap) so why spend the cash if it's still working?

When those resistors start to fail, the blower motor will just stop blowing intermittantly and usually start up again if the car is shut off and restarted. I saw a few of those last summer and neither had anything to do with a noisy blower motor. I don't ever routinely replace both parts at once unless they're both bad at the same time (rare).
