Squealing at idle 850 1994

Hello fellow Bricksters,

I need a little advice. I'm hearing a slight squealing noise from my engine compartment when I start the auto and it is idling. I presume this is coming from one of the belts? the serpentine? And could someone tell me the fix for this? The car's got 98K on it. TIA and Happy Holidays to all, Perry

Re: Squealing at idle 850 1994

Raise the hood of your car and start it so you can figure out where the noise is actually coming from. As mentioned by others the belt could be the problem, or the tensioner could be the problem, cold weather brings out the worst in any car with 98K on it but it could be a lot of things and without trying to see the noise (I know that sounds funny) it's hard to really say.

Re: Squealing at idle 850 1994

Has the serpentine belt been replaced recently? My 850 accidentally received a 960 belt during service. This belt is longer and will squeal after some time.

Symptoms in my car:

- sound was worse while turning the wheels

- small pieces of rubber around the belt area

- tensioner (square whole) was in extreme position

Re: Squealing at idle 850 1997

Perry,

I seem to be having the same problem. I get an on and off squealing noise from my engine compartment when I start up my 1997 850R. I think I'm chalking this up to the cold weather. Ever since we dropped below +20 degrees F. I've had this "strange" sound. If anyone thinks that it is something else please say so. It goes away after a short while 2-3 minutes. Performance is fine as well as all other operations.

You may try a can of belt dressing. That should help.
