1998 V70 GPS Location

Just bought a Garmin Nuvi GPS, but knew that location would be difficult in my '98 V70. Other than the glass, there is nary a flat or uncluttered surface for a suction device.

I would love to put it on the windshield just above my Boost Gauge Pod, but the power cord leading to the console 12V plug is "unweildy". Also considered placing the adhesive disc on the plastic just forward of the sun roof and attaching the suction device to that.

I would be interested in reading where other 850/V70 owners have placed their GPS ... and why.

1998 V70 GPS Location - use portable friction mount

You need the Garmin portable friction mount, about $25. It has a flexible bottom made of a sticky plastic, and it sticks to almost any dashboard surface. If the surface is curved, reshape the mount to fit. When you stop, take it off and stuff it under the seat - no evidence of the existence of a GPS unit. It's the easiest way to use you GPS in all your cars.

I saw that accessory when I bought the unit.

It looks like a "must-have" for a curviform fascia.

I saw that mount in the store and wondered if anyone had tried it on the V70 fascia. Good to know that it works, so I may invest in one. Thanks

1998 V70 GPS Location

I gave one to my daughter. For me, I wanted it as far down on the windshield as possible; with the top left of the screen making a straight line from my nose to the center of the hood. But, I sit with my head touching the headliner behind the sunroof, so I needed it low.

My daughter is very happy with it at the mirror height, she sits a lot lower than I.

You do not want the GPS to block any visibility. Does the 'sticky' pad not stick to the dash? You need to clean the vinyl with an amonia solution before applying the 2 sided tape.

1998 V70 GPS Location

I just drove 400 interstate miles today, so I had the opportunity to try several locations. I think I have found the best one for me.

I placed the suction device on the driver side window nearly touching the "A" pillar at about eye level for me. Looking at it is the same eye movement as checking the side mirror and the boost gauge, but neither is obstructed by the GPS. Also, I lose no windshield visibility and very little on the side, as the "A" pillar is right behind the GPS. Left hand is free to select features on the screen

I run the power cord from the center console 12V plug across the steering column and leave some catenary on the left side. So, I can open the door and exit without unrigging anything. Also, the cord does not affect manual gear shifting nor does it become entangled with my knees.

It works for me.

I mounted my Nuvi around the area of the ash tray. I actually "mounted" the base in the little open area below the ash tray (remove the ash tray) as well and ran the wire in the dash. I don't have to look at every detail of the GPS and just need the jist of where I am going.
