Howl and grinding sound from driver side front of S80 S80 2001

I have a 2001 S80 T6 with around 120,000 miles on it. There is a howl with grinding coming from the driver side front. It gets louder as speed increases. I plan to dig into the front brakes over the weekend to see if the caliper is not releasing on the inside of the rotor. If it is not brakes, would it be a bad CV joint? Any input would be appreciated. Trying to keep repair costs to a minimum.

Either brakes or wheel bearings. Just jack up the front wheel and spin it by hand, you will know soon enough.

If it is a wheel bearing, is it something that can be replaced individually or does the entire CV assembly have to be replaced?

      Thanks very much.

Wheel bearing is a separate item.

The wheel bearings on these are integrated into the hub. The hub assembly would need top be replaced if the wheel bearing was bad as it is not a serviceable item. If one is bad the other seems follow soon after, so it's best to replace them in pairs while you have the front-end up, to save from having to do it again soon. A fairly straight forward job.

Depending where you get them, they run about $65-$140 each online.

            Just wanted to to add:

When they go they start to sound like a bad snow tire (if they start to sound like that they should be replaced pronto). It is recommended to use new hub bolts (4 per side). When you take the bolts out and pop the hub off, try to pay attention to the back where the seal is. It may fall off and you'll lose the orientation of it. They should be replaced as well.
When I did mine, I ordered the seals, but my '99 didn't have seals, I believe all subsequent years have them though
