Bought '98 V70, have questions, ABS, redio, etc V70-XC70

Hi,

Recently I acquired a somewhat abused 1998 V70 with 163k. After I cleaned out about 10 lbs of doghair and wrappers it does not look so bad, except for horribly worn leather surfaces.
I changed the oil and filter, and plan on changing all fluids aswell as the timing belt.
There are a host of problems, but here the more immediate ones:

About 60% of the time the ABS light comes on, and ABS does not work. Sometimes I just shut the car off, restart, and the ABS light is off and ABS works. Does the ABS have a diagnostic mode like on the 940s? What should I check?

What else do I need when changing the timing belt? A tensioner bearing and an idler bearing?

The radio needs a code. I got the code form the dealer, but it did not work for this radio (must have been replaced). Like an idiot I put the code in 3 times, and now the radio is locked. The owner's manual says to leave the key on position I for 2 hours to reset it, so I can put codes in. I tried that, but the radio did not reset. Does the ignition need to be on for 2 hours?

I assume the car originally had keyless entry. How do I go about acquiring the proper device and program it to the car?
Thanks,

Csaba

The hydraulic tensioner does not need to be replaced. Just push it together and put a nail in the holding hole. If you buy a new tensioner, you will need to compress it very slowly (about 1 hours time).

Seat bottom leathers can be donated from the passenger front seats. The 850s should fit if you have a pick&pull available. The top covers are not interchangeable from side to side because of the lumbar support hole.

More questions V70-XC70

Klaus,

Thank you, great info!

Today I found a few more issues. The cruise control does not work.
How do I begin diagnosing it.

Right rear power window does not work from neither switch. Tried switching
that door's switch to another one and still nothing. Is it possible the wires
going to the door are broken?

Seem like whatever is supposes to hold the driver's door open is broken.
I can get one at PickNpull. Is it the same as on a 850?

The power locks for 3 doors seem to make noise, but do not lock or unlock
the doors. Before I tear into it, anything to watch out for?
Thanks,

Csaba

Cruise control can be a leaky vacuum hose or the switch at the brake pedal.

The window can be a problem from the driver's door switch, the wires seldom break.

The door stop is the same as an 850: http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exec/product_id/14001/nm/Volvo_V70_Door_Check_Front_Left_1998_2000_/category_id/165

You could have 3 broken door locks, a real pain to repair: http://volvospeed.com/volvo_repairs_how_tos/doors_latches/x70_latch_repair.html

Boy, that door latch repair does look like a pain. Sigh.

Look around for a sticker, the timing belt should have been replaced at around 130-140K, along with the tensioner roller.

There is no diagnostic port. Either resolder the ABS unit or send it off to get it done. You will need a E5 torx bit to get it off, not hard.

The remote must be dealer programmed, as is the service engine light. Because there is only one door key lock and the lift gate lock, I suggest using the key for both ends of the car, just to keep the locks from freezing up. Remotes can be purchased on Ebay, but the dealer still has to program the system.

Go back to parts dept with the radio serial number, not VIN, and ask them to look up the code. Leaving the key in posI and the radio turned 'on' for 2 hours will not harm anything. You might want to pull out the radio a little and see if there is a code written on top - numbers must be 1-6 only.

As for the ABS could try the solder fix in the module - not hard to do,
Change timing belt, idle pulley and tensioner as suggested by everyone, look at water pump while there.

I want to do my '99 coolant replace, but can't find the cylinder drain plug for the life of me, despite reading any info about on here. There's a photo I found but, although there are some familiar looking things, I must be looking ata slightly different part under there.

For the radio code I let my car sit without the battery cables connected I think, for a few hours then waited a few hours more then it let me enter code again - there is a fix for this and it doesn't involve leaving your keys on. I googled it but can't remember exact info.
Crikey, I would be more worried about frying some elec. part with the key on that long.
And, there is no need.
Did you give the dealer your Vin number?

Hi,

> Change timing belt, idle pulley and tensioner

OK. I already have a waterpump to put on.

>For the radio code I let my car sit without the battery cables connected I think

OK, I can just disconnect it overnight and see what happens.
Thanks,

Csaba

You can get a keyless entry from eBay etc. You buy units where the fob code matches the receiver, which goes behind the glovebox and the wiring plug will be there.
You can get matching leather pieces sewn in at an auto upholstery shop. Can be cheaper and less work than replacement seats. Look for car tops etc. in your area.
