radiator problem - serious! 850 1996

Good grief, driving home yesterday, steam coming from under hood. Stopped car asap and opened hood expecting blown hose. The connector pipe at the top of the radiator where the hose hooks up had broken off clean and antifreeze was everywhere.
Has anyone had this happen and is there any possible way to fix temporarily so I can get the car to a repair shop? I am some distance from any repair shop and would have to drive or pay a huge tow fee. Any Ideas? Thanks.

When you are purchasing a new radiator, make sure that is an OE Volvo part.

Aftermarket radiators (such as Nissens) have a habit of failing after a few years.

Have a most brilliant evening, one and all! :)

Towing is really your only good option. I've had that happen on a 740. Your only other option would be to clamp off the hose with a big ol' vise grip and drive until the temp starts to go up. Then turn it off right away to avoid overheating. After a long time, when the temp is back down, repeat. If it's cold outside you can probably get a few miles per run.

However, I am not condoning that option. It could very well end up with an overheated engine/warped head/other terrible problems. It's what I would've done while I was in college and very poor.

I suppose you could clean everything off really well and try some quick set epoxy and then run without the expansion tank cap on tight but I wouldn't bet the farm on it holding.

No duct tape or baling wire will keep the connector against the radiator for more than a couple of minutes. You are in for a tow.
