Cold Weather and CK Engine light!!! 850 1996

Now that winter has arrived my ck engine light has come on with no apparent reason??? The light came on in Nov and has not gone out. The car is starting fine and runs well. This happened last year also and our mechanic said to let it be as long as the car was running well?

The light went away after the temps were above 32 most every day.

Should we take it in and have the code checked anyways??

Dave

I had my check engine light go on last winter when it was really cold. The tranny switches acted up one day and then the light was on for about 3 months. So far so good this year.

    D,

The check engine lamp is something that you shouldn't ignore. Generally speaking it is triggered by any fault that affects the exhaust emissions. This could be any number of things, some quite simple (read cheap). There are also some half dozen transmission codes that can also trigger the lamp.

If your primary objective is to not do anything until the car stops running, and pay more later, then I'd say do nothing.

If you like to keep your car in top running shape for a long time, then take it in.
