air pump 850 1997

Good morning fellow brickers,

The check engine light on my car (1997 850, AT, 68.8K miles) went on during a recent trip to NH (lot of idling, temps in the single digits most of the time - if it matters). It looks like the air pump decided to quit and I should shell out over $450 in order to pass the emission inspection. Now, I have heard about AC condensors, AT transmissions, upper engine mounts and such, but this thing is new to me. Has anyone had this problem? Is there (by any chance) a recall on the air pump? (I guess, I am dreaming.....) Finally, is that something that I have to attack right away, or can I afford to wait for a few month and try to do it myself when it gets a bit warmer?

Anton.

    Re: air pump 850 1996

Mine went at 62K. Apparently there is a check valve above the thing that works poorly and lets water in, eventually trashing the pump. I had the control solenoid, the valve, abd the pump replaced for about $750 buck. Now have 134K on the car and so far so good. And yes, it does seem there are a lot of weak poiunts on a car like this.
