There chipped for sale on the market buy change the chipped some claim you will get more power without doing any other thing to the car..

these run about $200 some claim up 20 more horse power..

My question is will the increase shorten the motor life??

Lost speed at top end ?

Believe the ads--on a turbocharged Volvo, the chip upgrades will make a significant difference in performance. Claims are anywhere from around 30 HP to 50 HP depending on the which model you have. Torque is also significantly increased. Wear should not be an issue unless you race your car on the track (or don't maintain your car well). IPD is not the only chip on the market, there are many available but all offer pretty much the same thing, in terms of performance gains. Some others include RICA, Steffanson (which I hear is also Coyote Motorsports in the US), Wetterauer, PES, there are more, just can't think of them off the top of my head at the moment. But do your research and I'm sure you'll be happy with the outcome.

A "chip" for your Volvo will cost $750-$1000. Many suggest to also change the exhaust system to improve performance and help the "chip" perform to its maximum. Search the archives, as much has been spoken on this subject.

On a turbo model it would be more like 40 horsepower and

40 lb/ft torque improvements. See www.ipdusa.com for their

claimed improvements. (IPD chip update is done by swapping

the ECU and it runs about $900, I have not heard of any chip

updates under about $600 for Volvos).

Re: After market chipped to get more power pro &con please explain. 850 1994Turbo

Mrsha,

If you have a turbo, chipping will do two things. It will increase horsepower, and it will increase torque. It does so by changing the ECU characteristics against an idealized model of your engine type. The most common chracteristic that is changed is boost pressure, but it appears that some modification is done to allow softer shiftpoints as well. I have noted a 4-7 PSI across the board at full acceleration increase in boost pressure with my LPT system, and I believe even greater boost is possible with a HPT system.

Since I don't run around at full boost very often, I doubt there will be a significant increase in wear characteristics over the life of the engine.

I have noted as well that I am getting a 1-3 MPG improvement in gas mileage as well. Perhaps the torque characteristics of the engine have beem improved at lower RPM.

Yes I agree with the improvements on the ECU upgrade for the 97 850 GLT. I purchased my ECU from IPD. After talking with IPD, I decided not to upgrade the exhaust system because I do not run the car hard. ie... Wide open throttle more than 15 seconds....
