Water dripping from overhead light V70-XC70 1998

Not a problem most of the time, just on rare occasions. After a rain, never after washing the car, I will start it up and head down the street and water will drip from the overhead console lights. You can actually see the water sloshing around the lense!

Yes, the sun roof drains are clear. I am trying to figure out where the water is coming from. The only thing above the overhead console is the sunroof motor. Is there a missing bushing? Water must be coming from the cables that move the SR, which means that water is penetrating the cable housing.

This is so frustrating because the water drips down on my wife's knee or the center console. Obviously, I do not carry a small screwdriver to pop the lens off and undo the 2 torx screws to take the panel off. Hard to do while driving anyway.

I have looked after 2 days of rain and everything is dry.

Are you certain your car isn't equipped with the optional INTERIOR windshield washer?

Water dripping from overhead light - memories from the past V70-XC70 1998

The same used to happen in my 1971 Buick when I drove in a heavy rain. Water would drip down the backup mirror shaft and drip around and through a small map light. I found if I ran the heater on high, the moisture evaporation rate from the carpet on the transmission hump approximately equaled the water drip rate. That car did not have a sun roof, so I think the water came up are around the windshield gasket.

while in the drenching rains we had last week in MA I had the same thing happen. It was nice today so I was poking around and could not find out where it was coming from :(

Not from the windshield... V70-XC70 1998

I lifted the rubber at the top of the windshield and poured water into it using a cup. I almost got wet feet as the water poured out behind the front wheels.

Still looking. The cables for the SR go into the car above the slide rail, so that doesn't look promising either.

If it is humidity related, which I doubt, then there is going to be a real problem when it gets humid in July/August. Our dew point is less than 50 these days.

Because the cavity is isolated from the sun roof, except where the drive cables enter, I suspect the rubber trim at the top of the windshield is the culprit.

That trim shield is held on to the top of the glass, not the roof. Any dirt, and there is a lot of it, plus drying of the rubber, will create very small gaps that allow water to enter the cavity.

Supposedly, the windshield glue will keep the water out. But we all know what happens to European glue after 10 years. I did have my windshield replaced about 5 years ago, but it happened before then - I think, memory fades after you turn 65.

I am thinking of putting a bead of seal in the space between the glass and the roof. First, I will thoroughly clean the rubber strip and wax the roof metal to see if I get a better contact.
