S60 T5 vs. S70T5 S70 1998

Hello all,

Can anyone fortunate enough to be able to do the comparison tell me what is the performance and handling difference between the S60 T5 and the S70T5? I am also interested in the knowning the comparison of auto trans models. Thanks.

BTW, now that the T5 is limited to 129mph top speed, is there any advantage in getting the T5 as opposed to the 2.4T? I mean, there is no need for top end power anymore is there?

THanks,

Matthew

    Re: S60 T5 vs. S70T5 S70 1998

Last month's Car & Driver included the S60 in their comparison test. They did a similar comparison test with the S70 two years ago. You should be able to do a direct comparison from those two sets of tests.

I drive a S70 T5A, and was therefore interested in this S60 test. I was suprised that the S60 performance numbers were significantly less than the S70's. Then I looked at the weight of the S60. It's jumped up by over 200 lbs over the S70. The 3200 lb curb wt of the S70 was what gave it the performance edge over the competiton.

The 98' T-5 is not limited. I can attest to the vehicle's capability of reach 140 mph.

Not sure about that. If so, it would take quite a while to get up to that range and difficult to tell as the speedo only goes to 140

I had my S70 going 155, I think. The speedo was buried at 140, but the tach kept climbing. It eventually hit the wall at ~5.8k RPM, and I figured that was 155. I don't reccomend trying this, BTW. My heart jumped into my throat once I got on the brakes and they were stiff as a board. It was very stable overall at those speeds, though.

            Hey Sandwich Man,

Why are you worry about whether your ex-Volvo S70 T5M can go 155 or 140 ?

BTW, where did you tried to achieve this TOP SPEED ? I only can pray to God that you were on a racetrack because if you are on the street, then DON'T call me a dangerous driver because even a Formula 1 race car CAN'T stop within a " dime " at those speed, let alone a Volvo. Even I wouldn't dare to achieve those speed a few months ago when I was in Germany for a vacation with friends and we rented a BMW M5.

BTW, where is your Ferrari 360 Lugi, if you EVEN have one.

The pathological liar's antics continue. An M5, FOR RENT no less. Very interesting Kenny. I suppose you picked it up in Munchen directly from the corporate head office too. In fact, that'd be about the ONLY way to rent/borrow an M just about anywhere on the planet. Production is extremely limited and Bimmer isn't about to start offering fleet deals for operators when they're able to grab "MSRP" plus x number of dollars. Please Kenny, stop the lies. I for one am getting sick of it.

It was a joke Kenny. Sarcasm in the face of your lies.

Village idiot, that's whom we have here :) Or should we introduce a new term - List Idiot? :):):) The guy still has no clue....

                Cheers,

Kenny, you brainless DOLT. I suppose I wasn't driving recklessly enough to match up to the likes of you, because I didn't run anybody into the side of a semi trailer as I drove along. What happened to my Ferrari? I never had one, and I never seriously claimed to.. I put it in my signature line to make fun of fools like you that think you can hoodwink people into thinking you have a bunch of things you don't... That S70 (or was it a V70??) T5, X5 4.4i, Focus ZTS and SL600 armored limo? Where did they all go? And you rented an M5? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHH! I bet you've got brown eyes, Kenny, because you're totally full of shit.

          It's 153mph, per Michigan State Police S70 1999

The Michigan State Police got an S70 T5 police package up to 153 mph in their 2000 Model Year Police Vehicle Evaluation Program. The V70 T5 police package went 152 mph. Note that neither car had "R" components, a popular option on 70 series police cars. The 2000 Camaro police packages (auto and manual) were the only cars that went faster (160 mph and 159 mph, respectively.)

Volvo did not enter MSP's 2001 tests.

There is no comparison. The S60 will walk all over the S70 from a standing start and just keep pulling away. Handling? Don't even put them in the same category. The 70 is soft and tuned heavily for understeer. The S60 is about is good as you'll get with a FWD platform. It isn't a BMW 3 Series yet but it still kicks the crap out of its predecessor.

    > BTW, now that the T5 is limited to 129mph top speed, is there any

If you have to ask the question then "no" there isn't any advantage. The 2.4T is adequate for 95% of the population. I just happen to be among the 5% who believes you can NEVER have enough HP under the hood.

    > I mean, there is

    > no need for top end power anymore is there?

Was there ever. Last I checked you're still only LEGALLY permitted to travel at speeds between 55-75 MPH (95-125 km/h). 129 MPH is a far cry from what a cop is going to "let slide" when his radar sees you bombing by him at that speed.

The S70 has very pronounced turbo lag with the auto. This has been eliminated with the new 60. It throws its grunt to the ground very, very early in the revs.
