Hello All:

How prevalent is electronic throttle module failure in the V/S70 cars from 99-00 model years?

I am looking at a 2000 V70 and I am wondering what the statistics are like for ETM failures.

Oddly, the ETM in the family 1999 V70, now resident in Michigan, has not failed. This car has 5-speed manual and the NA engine. Mileage is only 85,000.

As Klaus mentioned, the refurbished units from www.xemodex.com are the way to go. I considered buying a 2000 V70 and that's what I would have done if the car's ETM went south.

Have you considered a 98 V70? Last year with a cable. I bought an 850, but if I were to buy a V70 I would shoot for a 98. Very good year.

Failure probability is 100% with the original units. Yellow labled units last a little longer, but are designed to fail eventually. The refurbished units from www.xemodex.com are never supposed to fail and are cheaper than Volvo OEM.

Klaus, I am not really up on the ETM but two experiences I know of where shade tree replacement (with a pick n pull part) of failed unit resulted in a full restoration. Goes to show even the daunting can yield to a little what the hell, try it and see. But this may be old news to the more FWD versed.

The problem with replacement parts is that it requires a software download. Unless the shade tree guys just replaced the head internal to the unit.

It's a pain. I love my cable, but the really new cars have integrated much more to the throttle body, like CC and injector shutoff.
