Whistle/Rubbing sound from Right side on engine compartment V70-XC70 2000

It's been a while since I posted because my 2000 V70XC SE has been great. Just today however I needed merge left quickly on the freeway so I dropped it down a gear and stepped on it.

The car performed fine but a few minutes later while crusing on the freeway at 75mph I heard a kind whistling/rubbing sound coming from the right front side of the engine compartment. It was intermittent but seemed to happen more when the car would bounce a little because of road conditions.

I wonder if the serpentine belt could be rubbing against something?

It is possible that the front engine mount finally broke and now the crank pully is rubbing on the subframe. The engine mount is above the right front wheel axle.

I suspect your are right. I have heard there are three motor mounts on the engine. Two are supposed to be on the bottom and one on the top. I believe the top one is against the firewall.

Are the other two on the right side of the car near the sub-frame. If so, if one is broken should I replace both and the other is likely to go sometime soon -- they were both original AFAIK.

There is one for the transmission also. The round mount at the front of the car usually lasts forever. The top mount disintegrates with age. The front mount, above the crank pulley will break in half and can cause the engine to rest on the subframe, or really close to it.

To inspect, remove the right front wheel, unscrew the inspection flap, and look at the bottom of the pully. There should be about 1/2 inch clearance.

Thanks for the clarification. I've got the motor on order but my local indie says his guys are taking their holidays this month so it will be a while before he can get me in.

I wonder if this is something I can do myself. Is it easy to get access to the mount once the front tire is removed? I have a couple of jack stands and a hydraulic jack. I imagine I could support the frame with the stands and then lift the motor with the hydraulic jack which would make swapping the mount possible.

Am I one the right track is there more involved?

          Thanks

You are on the right track! Use a piece of 2X4 on your hydraulic jack to raise the engine about 1/4 - 1/2 inch, just enough to support the engine weight.
