dang water leak after replacing head 99V70GLT V70-XC70

Well i told the ol lady to grab some beer money, while i top off the coolant & then do a shake down run to the beer store... While I was just starting to get in a good mood.

I herd this trickle, as i started to pour more of my antifreeze in, it seemed to come out at the same pace on the exhaust side! ^&%&

so i started looking I'm pretty sure it's leaking at that back flange that mounts to the head, right behind the exhaust camshaft gear.

So i used a dry paper gasket when i first bolted it up (No sealant). Was that wrong? Is there suppose to be some kind of rubber crush gasket, like the old 240s had on the pipe where it met the water pump? Or should i just make another gasket and throw some sealant on it, an be done with it? I did notice when i removed the gasket it had paint on it, i guess clearwater did some painting.

I'm so close it can taste it, I just need to get over this last bump...

It sure is hard on this end to imagine coolant just pouring out. At first I thought it was the head gasket!

YES, there is a sealant and not a paper gasket for the cam cover. The OEM sealant is quite expensive, but you will be able to get the cam cover off. Regular RTV will make removal impossible.

Get a 1 inch foam roller to put the adheasive down, nice and thin but uniform. Then put the cam cover back in place. I would wait at least an hour before topping off the antifreeze.

    No paper gasket.

I took her for a run and it looks good to go, by the time i got back all the codes were cleared & she was purring like a kitten. I got a few more things i want to do to her, but I'm hoping it passes emissions test today, so i can get her on the road, then I can do some other stuff. Anyways I appreciate all the help on this project Klaus, next time your in NC, the beer is on me!

Oh no.. It is NOT leaking where the head is split (cam cover) or the head gasket. It is leaking at the coolant pipe that bolts to the head directly behind, the exhaust camshaft gear.

I don't think it has a rubber crush sleeve by the feel of it. I can't find any drawings of it. So i made a new paper gasket & I'll throw some sealant on it and see how it works.

      wish me luck!

I don't have a diagram for that pipe either, but it probably is supposed to have an O ring. I would stop by a dealer parts counter and ask, they have all of the diagrams and will sell you an O ring for $5.
