Ticking noise? V70-XC70 1998

So lately my car has been ticking...a steady tic tic tic at idle and it speeds up when I throttle up. I've been looking into this as to what could be causing it and I want to hear what others think.

1. synthetic oil change in the last 1500 miles.
2. oil level looks good and hasn't used any yet.
3. PCV system hasn't been overhauled to my knowledge (130k miles)
4. Don't have equipment to measure oil pressure.

I'm thinking either PCV system needs an overhaul or there is an issue with the oil sump o-rings, so it's not picking up enough oil and causing the valves to tick.

Here's my other problem...how serious of an issue is this? In about a week or two I'm about to drive 2 hours away to get on a plane for vacation and while I don't want to damage my car, I don't know if I can get this fixed before I have to leave.

On a seperate issue, there is a protective plastic panel on the driver's side under where the passenger would sit that protects the gas tank. It has three bolts that stick down from the body. I went to go replace it due to the old plastic cracking and hanging down, but 2 out of the 3 bolts snapped either completely or partly. How would I go about fixing this? It's a fairly coarse threading...

IF it is the ticking of a valve lifter, then it is not going to ruin the engine. Oil is used to pump up the lifters, which have a very small oil passage. The passage tends to get clogged with a dirty engine, not related to the PCV system.

One way to help clean the engine is to run a bottle of AutoRx in your oil for 1000-1500 miles. BUT you cannot use synthetic oil for this procedure.

So, take your trip. When you get ready for your next oil change, use cheap oil and a bottle of AutoRx.

Of course, if it is a bad valve, you will need to check compression ASAP. I doubt that is your problem, and go on your trip anyway. Two hours is no big deal.

Wow...so confused at the moment. When I start the car up, no tics. After driving for 15 mins or so there is some ticking. Run inside for about 10-15 mins for an errand, come back out and start the car, no tics. Drive some more, no tics. Go inside for another errand, come back out start the car, ticking... I can't find a consistent pattern for the ticking.

Hello, I'm only telling you this because you're in pain. Your description sounds like one valve lifter; OR the normal sound an engine makes. Hard to tell in print. My 1999 ticked away merrily on Mobil 1 10W-30. While looking for synthetic P/S fluid, which was news to me, Royal Purple products were being promoted. The rep swore the additive package was from God. He freely admitted the base stock was Mobil 1. It made my engine silent. I do not sell the stuff, I am not an "oil obsessive" and I do not believe in anti-aging cream. It's embarrassing to admit this in public. If one lifter is clogged or leak stop putty starved something in your engine, you're going to have to live with it. Do what Klaus advised first. Then, for a few bucks more, try the snake oil. Kira

I get no performance issues....just that ticking noise. Actually, the car is running quite well and the turbo is boosting properly. So you might be right about the oil issue.

I put a quart of mobil 1 high mileage and some lucas upper cylinder lube in the car. I didn't hear any ticking when I started up the car and drove to work...however, when I got out of work about 2 hours later there was a slight ticking going on but not as loud as before. During that time the outside temp went from about 59 to 70 or so. Ideas?
