Stop by an autoparts store and find out what the codes are. Most stores will loan you the use of a scanner.

If you must drive, can you at least shift the tranny 'manually'? At least L and 3? Have you tried rowing the shifter about 20 times from R to L?

Do you also have an ABS light turned on? The speed signal goes through the ABS module before it gets to the tranny.

The problem should have happened when the old ABS unit died, and should have cleared with the new/refurbished ABS installed.

If your daughter drove the car without the ABS installed, check the fuse for the ABS.

A really good code reader should be able to clear the codes. Or, you could try disconnecting the battery terminals for 15-20 minutes - this will reset your computers and the car will have to go through the drive cycle to re-learn.

the code did clear when i installed in and now since i messed with it this morning its back on. (the 1633 code)
I did check check the fuse for the abs and it was ok
i did just disconnect the battery for 20 mins and hooked it back up and all the lights are still on
I didnt want to drive it not knowing what kind of damage it would do and not sure if thats what you meant when you say the car will go through the drive cycle to relearn.

I tried this morning to disconnect the abs to see if it might have been a faulty abs that i put on. I started it and it did the same thing and now the abs light wont go back off AND the spedometer isnt working. Whew this is frustrating to say the least! Is there any way to get a hold of you and talk to you on the phone, i can give you my number if possible?
          thanks, jim

I suspect the ABS module. Where did you get it? Is it for a 2000 FWD?

The ABS light will not go out until you exceed 20 mph so that the module can do its run time test. The speedo should always work. Check the connection, again.

a foreign salvage yard who tested it and said it was good and with the codes going out i believe it is good, i just disconnected it cuz someone said if i did that and tried to drive it without the abs it would work but it didnt and now i got it all hooked back up and my abs light and brake light are on and the spedometer is not working nor the odometer. is that something that will clear up on its own or did i mess something up? or am i just an idiot for buying a volvo? LOL
