bevel gear oil

99 XCV70 145000 miles Removed vibration damper and removed 6 o'clock stud expecting oil to drain out, nothing. Is it possible that this car has never had the oil changed? Never had the drain hole drilled out? The oil is very dark, and the fill plug end was quite gunked up with thick tarry stuff. I guess I will have to drill it out.

Very good possibility. With the nut out, go ahead and drill the rest of the casing out. Loosen the fill plug first, just 1/8 turn, to make sure it is not frozen.

Drain what is left, refill, and use a new crush washer.

No need to clean it out. Treat it like a rear differential. It is just happy to have fresh oils.
