2002 V70 intermittent starting issues V70-XC70 2002

Hello,

I recently purchased a used 2002 V70 with 90,000 miles. My mechanic checked out the vehicle and said it was in great shape. About a month ago, about 1 out of 15 attempts to start the vehicle will need 2 turns of the key. The car wont start on the first turn. It doesn't seem consistent with outside temperature or the time frame in-between starts.

My mechanic ran the car with his computer and it said there was an issue with the crank sensor. That was replaced, but the problem still exists. Any opinions on the issue from those Volvo experts out there?

Thanks!

First guess would be the fuel pump relay or the check valve in the fuel pump.

You can easily check to see if the fuel pump relay is working - the pump should prime the line for a second or two when you first turn the key to the 'run' position (the position the key is in when driving down the road - 1 stop before the 'start' position, which is all the way clock-wise). You should be able to hear it.

The check valve is a bit harder to measure but certainly DIY-able. You have to get a fuel pressure gauge in the line between the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel rail. I'm not sure if this stuff is in the same place on the P2 cars as on the earlier cars, but there should be a fitting where you can get the gauge on the fuel rail on the passenger's side of the engine. The pressure should stay up (around 30psi??) for at least 15-20 minutes after you shut the car off. If the pressure drops immediately you can be pretty sure the check valve is bad.

If you need a new check valve you can replace the pump or probably put an inline check valve in.
