Leather seat preservative? V70-XC70

Can anyone recommend a good product for keeping the leather driver seat and the others of course in good shape?
Maybe it is something as simple as a product from a shoe repair shop.
I don't want to allow the leather to degrade in my next car like I did with the last one.

Thanks!

    MD,

I've tried just about everything and read more about leather care than a sane person should. So, here is my take on this.

First, the leather is lightly corrected (plated) pigmented/top coated top-grain leather made from the hides of European cattle.

Second, the key to leather preservation is to regularly remove the body oil, and especially the salt from perspiration, that degrades the top coat. Once the top coat is damaged it's all downhill from there.

Any name brand water-based cleaner and conditioner will be fine.

Wiping down the seats with a damp micro-fiber towel every couple of weeks will remove dust and rehydrate the hides.

For easy care at a reasonable price I like Lexol "3-in-1" for routine maintenance and Volvo Cleaner and Protectant 3-4 times a year. Lexol conditioner is great to restore softness as needed.

    YMMV,
    Bryan

The best product I've ever seen for conditioning leather is called neatsfoot oil. It's really messy though. Best to apply on a hot afternoon and let the car get really hot in the sun with the windows up to hold the heat in. The leather will soak it right up. Put it on nice and think and just leave it there all afternoon in the sun, and reapply every couple of hours.

    Kiwi makes a great one:

I've never used the Volvo (or BMW or MB) dealer stuff though I'm sure it's great too.

Remember that the leather needs to be about 60F - 80F when a product is applied. MB, BMW, and Volvo dealers sell a good conditioner without lanolyn and a jar will cost over $10 but last for about 2 years.

It also makes a diffference as to the color of the car. The darker the paint, the warmer the interior when parked in the sun. My black V70 easily reached baking temperature of 150F when parked in the sun for 2 hours. My wife's white car only hit 110F at the same time. Shade temp was 72F and low humidity.

Never use any conditioner, vinyl or leather, on the dash. All products will make it shiney and cause glare on the windshield. Mild soapy water with a damp cloth is all that is needed.

I have been using the Lexol regimen in my 98 xc. It's a two step process of cleaning and then conditioning. It's been my experience that you only need a little Lexol conditioner to make it work. I also have a bottle of the all in one Meguiars that seems to be ok.

I was thinking of going the Leatherique route but really don't have time to do it at you are supposed to. I plan on using up the Lexol kit and trying out the Zymbol next. At ten bucks a whack for each of the different brands out there I was not going to start joy spending. I have come to terms with the fact that its a 98 and has 209K miles on it so I cannot expect too much...but I don't have any cracks :)

Regardless of what you choose its best to make sure you clean the leather. What has worked with me has been a bucket of warm water and a microfiber cloth. Get it damp/sorta wet and really work the leather. You don't want to polish conditioners into leather that is full of dirt and sand. Once I go over it like that I then use the Lexol cleaner, followed by the conditioner. Sometimes the conditioner leaves the leather a little tacky (my fault, maybe used too much) so I buff it out with an old beach towel after giving few squirts of water. The tackiness goes right away and then its nice and soft.

Klaus is right about the dash, don't shine it you will regret it. I have been using some Meguiars wipes that do not have a gloss to them. They clean really well and seem to have some conditioning effect. Armor All will make it unbearable to drive especially if your dash is black and you drive during rush hour solar glare.

      Steve
