Hard shifting from park to drive V70-XC70 1998

It's been hard to go from park to drive on my 1988 v70. Not sure what it could be. It goes fine from drive to park. Any ideas?

If the problem occurs on level ground, it could be the problem that I had on my 850.

The shift lever is just pressed on to its shaft.

I found that the lever had risen a bit and pulling on the button in the shift Knob did not unlock the lever from park.

I gave it a couple of firm smacks on the top of it and the problem was gone. Hit it squarely on the top, in line with the shaft.

I love that solution V70-XC70 1998

Just put the shifter in 'N', grab any Tom Clancy hardback, and give the top of the shifter a good whack!

If you park on a slight incline, most of us do, use the emergency brake to hold the car and THEN engage park. The parking pawl inside the tranny is trying to hold 4300 lbs.

Klaus - If the problem occurs on level ground, it could be the problem that I had on my 850.

I checked the brake switch and the shift lock, then I took the console out and observed how a white shaft pressed down when the button on the shift lever is depressed.

What I found was that the shaft did not come down far enough to unlock the shift lever. Since the shaft was not damaged, I figured that the lever must have gotten longer!

This happened two summers ago and I have had no problems since.
