fuel filler door stuck closed V70-XC70 1998

The fuel filler door on my 1998 V70 AWD will not open. I need to put fuel in the car in order for it to go. :) Any suggestions? Thanks!

Check the power door lock switches on both sides. Sometimes one of the switches gets stuck in the lock or unlock position and this prevents the gas door switch from working properly. Both switches should be "centered"

The emergency handle for the door is explained in your owner's manual.

Thanks. Any idea where? I looked for it (thinking that must be the case) and could not find it under any category I would expect to find it.

Although it is a bit of a chore, it is possible to remove the inner panels and check the motor that unlocks the door.

I found that the hole in the bushing around the lock pin was not punched properly and a small bit of rubber was causing friction. Take a close look at the pin using a bright light when the door is open, you may see the flaw. I fixed a second 850 without removing the motor - I was able to remove the rubber fragment with a dental pick.

After i removed the rubber, I cleaned the motor with WD40 and lubricated the motor with silicone spray it worked for the next 6 years at least. Now the car named Gayorg has been sold.

If you do try to take the wagon apart, start at the top of the tailgate opening and work down and forward. I took the side all off, but you might try bending it a bit to get at the motor

Pull the right rear inside cover away from the body. Reach in and pull/push the lever to release the flap. You probably don't have a flashlight handy to see what you are doing.

Leave the flap open until you figure out why the motor will not open the flap.

Is the motor near the door opening? (I ended up "prying" the door open, as I needed gas, breaking the latch tab in the process.)

Yes. Take off the right rear inside panel and all is exposed. Unlike the 850, there is no emergency wire to pull the actuator.

Test the motor by pushing the filler switch and watching the motor arm move. The switch itself might be defective. Check fuses also.
