Parking brake went from totally loose to super tight? V70-XC70 1999

The parking brake on my 99 V70 was completely loose since I bought the car. I took apart one rear wheel and found nothing obviously wrong with the brakes. Then out of no where the pull up handle went from being totally free, and when I say free I mean it did not engage the eBrake shoes, to now it is super tight. I know if I force it up it will break something. Anyone know the mechanical trail of the parking brake system well enough to offer a thought as to what the problem may be? I did pull up a bit on the handle it feels like there is movement inside the rubber covering the cable on both sides by the rear wheels?

One of the parking brake shoes probably fell off. I suggest getting new shoes and hardware for both rear brakes. Your cables are probably fine.

I am having a similar situation with my 99 v70. Just wonder whether it is a relatively simply job to replace the parking brake shoes?

thanks,

Fairly simple. Slacken handle adjustment in the center console, remove wheel and caliper, pull rotor, replace shoes. Grease the heck out of everything you won't see for years and years, put the rotor back on, adjust the star nut, put on caliper and wheel. Ditto for other side.

Parking brake went from totally loose to super tight? V70-XC70 1999

Hi, Klaus,

Took a look at rear wheels the other day. I have a queston on removing the caliper since the rigid brake fluid line is attached. Is there enough room to get the caliper out of the way without stressing the brake line too much?

Thanks,
Paul

Just remove the clamp holding the line to the rear axle, if you think there will be a problem.

Thank you very much, Klaus.

Sounds really easy when you describe it. :-)

Cheers.

I hadnt thought of that. In the past when I have had the experince of the park brake shoes coming off I had an awful thumping out of the rear wheel as it jammed while bouncing around, and once it locked up a 240 wheel on me. I guess in my current situation if the shoe came off and fell right it could be hung up in a way where it is not interfering with the wheel spinning. I'll check it out.
